PARATY AND ANGRA: NATURAL AND HISTORICAL BEAUTY
Paraty (RJ) and Angra dos Reis (RJ) are part of a privileged stretch of the enchanting Costa Verde (Green Coast), a coastal strip between the northern part of the state of São Paulo and the southern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Both cities are natural havens, boasting the contrast between the beauties of the Atlantic Forest (with about 85% of its native coverage well-preserved) and the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean ecosystems that offer delightful encounters. While Paraty blends Caiçara culture, colonial architecture, and indigenous influences, Angra was one of the first places in Brazil to be “discovered” in 1502. Paraty provides a diverse menu for those who want to enjoy life among the sea, the mountains, and the Atlantic Forest. On the other hand, Angra is insular, with 365 is lands, eight bays, and over a thousand beaches with crystal clear waters and abundant vegetation. Due to their cultural and natural riches, Paraty and Ilha Grande Island (the largest island in the state of Rio de Janeiro, belonging to the municipality of Angra dos Reis) were designated as UNESCO World Herita ge sites in 2019. This was the first time Brazil had a place recognized both for the legacy of a civilization and for the beauties gifted by mother nature. Barthelemy’s proposal perfectly aligns with the atmosphere of these places: we indulge in the comfortable elegance of the city and the brand’s pieces, perfect for going from the cobblestone streets of Paraty’s Historic Center to a boat trip through the salty waters. And, upon return, savoring the sunset with a drink in hand and a smile on your face.
Have a good trip,

How to get there: Paraty and Angra dos Reis
When to go?
You can enjoy Paraty and Angra all year round, but summer is the liveliest time – despite being the rainiest: in Paraty, some streets in the city center flood, a phenomenon that has become part of the city’s daily life.
How to get there
From Rio de Janeiro:
Departing from Rio, take BR-101 (Rio-Santos Highway), and the drive takes about three hours to reach Angra dos Reis. Continuing along the coastline, you’ll arrive at Paraty approximately an hour later. It is located further south in the state, about 250 km from the center of Rio de Janeiro.
From São Paulo:
From São Paulo, take President Dutra Highway (SP-60) or the Ayrton Senna/Carvalho Pinto corridor, and then continue on Rio-Santos Highway. After crossing the border into the state of Rio de Janeiro, you’ll reach Paraty. From there, it takes about an hour and a half to reach Angra following Rio-Santos.
Private Transfer:
Since cars are not the best way to get around there - neither in Paraty nor in Angra - you may consider an alternative means of transportation. Top Transfer offers options in cars and vans departing from São Paulo and Rio, with prices starting at R$ 400 per person. @topilhagrande
Air Transfer:
You can reach Angra and Paraty by helicopter, departing from both São Paulo (1h15 duration) and Rio de Janeiro (45min). Rotorfly serves these routes with three aircraft models, accommodating 3 to 6 passengers, and providing roundtrip transfers ranging from R$ 24,800 (Robinson 44 model) to R$ 43,200 (EC130B4 model); @rotorflybr. The on-demand charter company Flapper offers options starting from R$ 35,100, departing from São Paulo (up to five passengers), and R$ 12,100 taking off from Rio (with up to five passengers). @flyflapper
How to get around
In Paraty, the primary mode of transportation is by foot. Be prepared to walk a lot on cobblestone streets (tip: wear comfortable shoes). In Angra, the best way to get around is by boat. You can either rent a private boat or use the services of taxi-boats to hop from one island to another.
Happening in Paraty and Angra:

Paraty's Historical Center
Due to their isolation amidst abundant nature, Paraty and Angra have a strong sense of community, strengthened by fishing activities and the close relationship people have with the sea. Life in these cities is a reflection of this, with events and traditions that involve, entertain, and drive the community’s economy. Tourism and gastronomy are vital forces in these places, and there is no shortage of options to fill your days with adventures, natural beauties, and delightful meals. Oh, how not to love…
VISIT DISTILLERIES AND TASTE ARTISANAL CACHAÇAS
Cachaça is the symbolic drink of Paraty, produced in the region since the 18th century. The most classic variety is Gabriela, a sugarcane spirit infused with cloves and cinnamon, in spired by Jorge Amado’s novel, Gabriela, Cravo e Canela, whose TV adaptation was filmed in Paraty in the 1970s. Visit artisanal distilleries like Engenho d’Ouro (page 21). Upon returning to the city, indulge in exclusive cocktails made with cachaça at the bars in Paraty. And don’t forget to take a bottle home with you.

DISCOVER PARATY ’S HISTORICAL CENTER
The historical center is the most emblematic part of the city, with its cobblestone streets that frequently flood and where walking is the only way to go and one can enjoy the sensation of stepping back in time. While you can explore these places on your own, a guided tour will unveil secrets and details connected to the historical and architectural contexts. Free Walker Tours offers free tours with voluntary contributions at the end. @freewalkertours
CELEBRATE THE FESTIVITIES
In Paraty, the major annual events include Folia de Reis (January), Festa de Iemanjá (February), Carnival (with giant dolls and the Bloco da Lama taking center stage), and the traditional Festa do Divino Espírito Santo (held in May, since the 17th century). In Angra, the New Year is marked by the Procissão Marítima (Maritime Procession), a religious celebration with a Carnival-like atmosphere. Filled with partygoers, the decorated boats depart from the city center en route to the Ilha da Gipóia Island.

SPEND A FEW HOURS ON A BOAT
Boat trips on schooners, speedboats, or yachts are among the main activities both in Paraty and Angra. There are various routes to choose from. EXPLORE THE SURROUNDINGS
The Green Coast stretches far beyond the Historic Center of Paraty and the paradisiacal islands and beaches of Angra dos Reis. There are many other enchanting places to discover, such as Fazenda Bananal and Fazenda Marinha Coquille da Cajaíba. The neighboring town of Cunha is famous for its lavender plantations and is definitely worth a visit to further awaken your senses.
"Whenever I go to Paraty, I always stop at Sancho Pança (@sanchoparaty), located at the beginning of the Paraty-Cunha road. Their specialty is Beef Ribs, which arrive at the table on a hotplate, accompanied by queijo coalho (grilled cheese), cassava cream, tutu, and beans. A true classic!" Where to Eat in Paraty and Angra dos Reis
PARATY: GASTRONOMY 100% BASED IN LOCAL PRODUCE
In Paraty, gastronomy is strongly connected to the local production both agricultural, which includes products from Cunha and the municipalities of Serra da Mantiqueira, and the fishing industry. As a result, you can indulge in fresh and seasonal food sourced directly from the community: bananas, cassava, fish, and an array of seafood varieties. The sugarcane and its byproducts - especially cachaça and molasses - also take center stage. However, one of the greatest symbols of Paraty’s Caiçara cuisine is “camarão casadinho” - a dish where succulent shrimps are stuffed with a delicious filling made from smaller shrimps. Another Paraty classic is fish (particularly snook, grouper, and mullet) with bananas served alongside a traditional fish stew called “pirão.”
GISELA SCHMITT’S FAVORITES
Originally from São Paulo but with a deep love for Paraty, chef Gisela Schmitt has been living in Paraty for eight years. Currently, she runs the renowned restaurants Gastromar and Japamar, as well as the boat “Sem Pressa,” (loosely translated as “No Rush”), all known for their top-notch gastronomy.

Japamar
Gastromar
“Gastromar was created to meet the growing demand we had at Sem Pressa,” explains Gisela. “For six years now, we’ve been located at the Porto Imperial marina, with a terrace that is the highlight of the place. Our menu is seasonal and respects the closed season (the period when certain seafood species are protected from fishing to allow them to reproduce). Since 2021, we’ve had our own organic garden, and we’ve also started to explore more Non-Conventional Food Plants (PANCs).” For starters, try the Crab Toast (toasted bread with butter and crab meat from Saco do Mamanguá). Then, order the Yemanjá, a dish featuring our grilled catch of the day, shrimp, octopus, squid, and mussels, a true celebration of the flavors of the sea. @gastromar
Japamar
The first Japanese restaurant in Costa Verde to use only local fish is also located at Marina Imperial, just like its “sister” restaurant Gastromar. The menu is exquisite, offering a wide range of fish and impeccably presented typical Japanese dishes. “Japamar came to strengthen our relationship with local fishermen and artisanal fishing,” says - Gisela. “I love being able to introduce and serve fish that people haven’t encountered before and have never tried.” @japamardelivery
Pippo
Located inside the Sandi Hotel, Pippo embraces contemporary cuisine with Sicilian inspiration - the chef Pippo Muscara, who runs the kitchen and catches many of the fish served in the restaurant, is Sicilian. The restaurant has its own scallop farm and an artisanal cold cuts production, ensuring top-notch ingredients in their dishes. The decoration, inspired by Italian cinema from the 1960s, is an attraction in itself. @restaurante_pippo
Peró
In Peró, you’ll experience the original flavors of Brazilian cuisine with strong indigenous influences. The dishes combine locally grown ingredients, such as cassava, heart of palm, and banana. The urucum-flavored farofa and tucupi broth (made from the cassava root) are some of the house’s specialties. @perooficial
Thai Brasil e Thai Paraty
The presence of Thai cuisine in Paraty has a simple explanation: the dedication of caiçara Gegê Lopes (@ThaiParaty) and German native Marina Schlaghaufer (@ThaiBrasilRestaurante) to Thailand’s gastronomy. Both restaurants are delightful, with menus that complement each other. “At Thai Brasil, I love the Green Squid Curry. At Thai Paraty, my favorites are the Green Papaya Salad and the Shrimp Pad Thai,” recommends Gisela.

STARRING, THE CACHAÇA
CLEAR WATERS AND WHITE SANDS
Whether you want to engage in sports or simply relax by the seaside, the beaches of the Costa Verde are for everyone
Choosing the best or most beautiful beaches in the Costa Verde is not a simple task. There are numerous options scattered along the coastline and the hundreds of islands that surround this place. You can expect the best scenery: crystal-clear waters and white sands framed by the Atlantic Forest – a combination that rarely disappoints. The natural pools and stunning stretches of beach in Angra and Paraty are often “hidden” on the islands, usually accessible by boat. In some cases, you can also reach them through hiking trails, which for certain people makes the journey as enjoyable as the destination. We have selected six precious gems for you to include in your itinerary:

Dentista Beach
Praia do dentista (Dentista Beach)
Praia do Dentista, on Gipóia Island, is an other must see in Angra. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the region, with crystal-clear waters and fine white sand. You won’t find any facilities on the beach, although boat restaurants serve boats and yachts anchored there for the day. An alternative way to reach Praia do Dentista is to take a 30 minute trail starting from Praia da Fazenda.
Cajaíba
Pouso da Cajaíba is part of the Juatinga Ecological State Reserve and remains a secluded village in the Costa Verde. Access to the village is only by boat (from Paraty or Paraty-Mirim) – it was only in 2017 that electricity reached the area. The beach is small, with calm waters, and it has some restaurants and bars where you can order snacks and drinks and enjoy a slowpaced time, in the true caiçara style. From Cajaíba, you can continue to the beaches of Toca do Carro, Itanema, or Calhaus (by boat or through trails, which takes about half an hour). However, please note that there is no infrastructure in these places. So, if you want to spend the day immersed in nature, it’s best to prepare a picnic.
Lopes Mendes
A famous beach in Ilha Grande also impresses with its clear sand and crystal-clear water. Those who visit it on a sunny day quickly understand why it is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It is also great for surfing, so be attentive on wave days.

Lagoa Azul
Lagoa Azul
Lagoa Azul is the chosen destination for most boat tours departing from Paraty and Vila do Abraão (Ilha Grande Island). Amidst rocks and lush vegetation, you come across a vast natural pool with translucent water, where marine life is abundant.
"Lagoa Azul holds a special place in my itinerary in Angra. The sunset there is beautiful. Eating a pastel from the little boats that pass by selling them is essential." Diogenes Bjay
Cachadaço
The natural pool of Cachadaço, at the end of the beach with the same name, is one of the most famous attractions in Paraty. Surrounded by a barrier of rocks, it is shallow and full of fish – bring a mask and snorkel to enjoy diving in this marine aquarium. To get there by the trail, it takes about 30 minutes, passing through Praia do Meio and the Cachadaço beach itself.
Visitando o Saco do Mamanguá
Part of the Juatinga State Ecological Reserve, Saco do Mamanguá is a protected stretch of sea, the only one of its kind in Brazil, measuring 8 km in length and 2 km in width. Eight caiçara communities call this place home, and it includes 33 beaches, including some of the most beautiful in the region. It’s a perfect place to truly relax and immerse yourself in nature at your own pace. To get there, you need to take a boat from Paraty-Mirim, which takes about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the boat and sea conditions. Another option to access the area is by hiking a trail from the Paraty-Mirim pier. The hike takes about two hours and includes a steep ascent at the beginning, so it’s only recommended for those with good physical condition. While you’re there, make sure to try Dadico’s Restaurant
"Cada esforço é válido para chegar ao topo do Pico Pão de Açúcar, no Saco do Mamanguá. O caminho é por uma trilha linda, no meio da mata e com uma vista fenomenal. No Mamanguá, uma coisa que amo fazer com as crianças é alugar caiaques para explorar o mangue. Depois de meia hora de remada, você chega em uma trilha curta que te leva até uma cachoeira." BY LAND
Grounded experiences that take you far

As you’ve probably noticed, the sea is the main attraction for most activities in Angra and Paraty. However, don’t limit yourself: those who enjoy an adventure by land also have plenty of options. The rivers, forests, and mountains of Costa Verde offer an extensive menu of trails, waterfalls, and natural pools waiting to be explored.
"Angra offers more than just the sea. A 30 minute walk from Praia do Frade leads you to Cachoeira do Palmital. And for those who continue climbing for a few more minutes, a hidden tresure awaits – Cachoeira Secreta, a true spectacle." Diogenes Bjay
Hiking Trails and Waterfalls
You’ll find an abundance of hiking trails to explore in both Angra and Paraty. If you start from Paraty, you’ll have several options to choose from. For example, there’s a trail to the natural pool of Cachadaço, which is easy, well-marked, and takes you through Praia do Meio. Another great option is the trail to Cachoeira da Pedra que Engole, also an easy hike starting from Praia do Meio, leading to a rock formation that acts as a natural waters lide passing through a “tunnel.” For more adventurous hikers, the Caminho do Ouro trail is the perfect choice. It takes three to five hours to complete and leads you through the Serra da Bocaina National Park, offering one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the region. Paraty Explorer offers guided tours for these and other routes. @paratyexplorer
In Angra, the most famous trail is the Pico do Papagaio (Parrot’s Peak) on Ilha Grande Island. It takes about three hours through the forest to reach the summit. For the avid hikers, there’s the option of starting the trek before dawn and being rewarded with an unforgettable sunrise. @ilhagrandehiking
SEA, SWEET HOME
Exploring saltwater activities is a must on your itinerary.
A day on a boat
You’ll likely spend several days aboard a boat, as the most exquisite beaches in Paraty and the numerous islands in Angra can only be accessed this way. There are various boat options and activities. However, unlike many tourist destinations, the itineraries in Angra and Paraty are diverse - each agency offers its own routes, which vary from day to day. A schooner tour is one of the most traditional activities in Paraty. In Angra, one of the main routes lasts about six hours, visiting Praia da Fazenda and the islands of Botinas and Gipóia. Along the way, you’ll also see Ponta da Piedade and the beaches of Flechas and Dentista - or the Ilha Grande Island. In Paraty, another popular route includes stops at Vermelha and Lula beaches, Lagoa Azul, and Ilha Comprida Island. There are also options focused on diving, with destinations featuring ship wrecks and marine wildlife observation. Estrela da Manhã (@estrelatoursparaty) and Angra dos Reis Turismo (@angradosreisturismo) offer shared tours (starting at R$90 per person) or private tours (a boat for up to 11 people starting at R$1,200).
Sailing is highly recommended
To fully enjoy the Costa Verde sea, you can create an exclusive itinerary onboard a sailboat. In a charter expedition, include islands and beaches in an area that covers Paraty-Mirim, the bay of Ilha Grande Island, and Angra dos Reis, with protected anchorages to ensure peaceful nights of sleep. Starting from R$1,600 per day (for up to 4 people). @windcharterbrasil
Rowing Expedition
Renting a kayak is an intimate way to ex plore parts of the Costa Brava sea with more autonomy. You can choose from short and peaceful routes, passing through deserted islands and mangroves in Paraty, to multi-day crossings in ocean kayaks (accompanied by a specialized guide). Prices start at R$ 200. @paratyexplorer
Jet ski
Jet skis are a common vehicle in Angra due to its convenience and the zero effort required to explore its clear waters. Angra is so favorable for jet ski activities that in 2022, the city hosted the Brazilian stage of the Jet Raid, a competition that welcomed athletes from 15 countries. If your intention is to enjoy a jet ski ride at your own pace, rent one and have a great time. Prices start at R$ 700 per hour (only for licensed drivers). @luxxboat

Diving
Paraty Bay is protected by the Ilha Grande Bay, which is why it offers calm waters and ex cellent visibility almost all year round. There are several diving spots, including shipwrecks and vibrant marine life. The main ones are Ilha dos Meros, Ilha dos Ratos, and Ilha Comprida. The period from May to November is the most recommended for diving, as there is less rainfall in the region. If you haven’t explored the underwater world yet but want to start, take a scuba diving course, including a baptism experience, with Adrenalina Mergulho, which offers daily departures starting at R$ 405. @adrenalinamergulho
Surf
Some beaches in Paraty are truly special for surfing. There’s something for all levels and styles: at Cepilho, the waves are powerful and tubular. In Trindade, Praia Brava attracts surfers and bodyboarders. Praia do Sono, at the beginning of the Juatinga Traverse, is a more remote option. On Gipóia Island, in Angra, Grandes and de Fora beaches also attract surfers. Generally, southeast swells, more common in the fall, make the waves rise in these places. If you want to learn to surf, you can contact Casa da Aventura, which offers packages with lessons and equipment included, starting at R$ 375. @casadaaventuraparaty
Aquatic Crossings
Multi-sport enthusiasts who enjoy swimming in open waters can participate in the races organized by Swim Run Brassil (@swimrunbrasil_srb), which combine swimming and running in courses of 4 km, 10 km, and 12 km. For other challenges, the Swim Challenge of XTerra (@xterrabr) offers distances of 1.5 km and 3 km. Another option is Aquaman Brave (@desafiosaquamundo) an aquatic crossing race that, in 2022, featured a 13 km relay course (swimming and rowing) around Saco do Mamanguá
